On 13 March 1987, under the leadership of Syed Fazlul Karim, Ameer of the Bangladesh Mujahid Committee, several Islamic organisations and figures together started the Islami Shasantantra Andolan as an issue-based movement. On 20 November 2008 the party was registered with the Election Commission under the name Islami Andolan Bangladesh; its electoral symbol is the hand fan. Syed Rezaul Karim has been the party's Ameer since 2006. In the 2026 election one of its candidates was elected a Member of Parliament.
