About the party

A party formed by the young people who led the July 2024 uprising, founded in 2025. It contested the 2026 election as a member of the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance. It has 8 members in the 13th Parliament.

After the Awami League government fell in the 2024 uprising of students and the people, Students Against Discrimination spoke of a new political settlement. In September that year the Jatiya Nagorik Committee was formed under the leadership of Akhter Hossen and Nasiruddin Patwary, and committees were then set up at thana level across the country.

The National Citizen Party was launched on 28 February 2025 on the initiative of these two organisations, with Nahid Islam as convener; it is described as the country's first student-led political party. The party was given the water lily bud as its electoral symbol, and on 28 December 2025 it joined the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance and contested the 2026 election.
