Mohammad Aminul Haque

Technocrat state minister · Not an MP

Profile

Mohammad Aminul Haque is State Minister for Youth and Sports, appointed under the technocrat quota; he took the oath on 17 February 2026. A former captain of the Bangladesh national football team and one of the best goalkeepers in the country's history, Aminul is the first former sportsman to enter the Cabinet directly without being a member of parliament. He is the BNP's central sports affairs secretary and convener of the Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP. He is not a member of parliament.

He was born on 5 October 1980 in Bhola and grew up in Mirpur, Dhaka. He became interested in football following the example of his elder brother, Moinul Haque. He began playing for MSPC City Club in the Pioneer League and did not concede a goal in his first nine matches.

He played for Mohammedan, Farashganj, Abahani, Muktijoddha Sangsad, Brothers Union, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club and BJMC; he won the Premier League, several Federation Cups and the 2009 Super Cup, and also received the best goalkeeper award at the Super Cup. He made his debut for the national team in a friendly against Qatar in 1998 and captained the team for a long time. His crucial save in the final played a part in winning the 2003 SAFF Championship; he was named best goalkeeper of that tournament. At the 2010 South Asian Games, as captain, he led the under-23 team to the gold medal without conceding a single goal. Former national team coach György Kottán called him one of the best goalkeepers he had seen. He ended his 17-year professional playing career at the end of the 2013-14 season.

After retiring from football he joined BNP politics in 2014. In the 2026 election to the 13th Parliament he was the BNP candidate for Dhaka-16. As State Minister he has spoken of plans to build a playground in every union and a mini-stadium in every upazila of the country, with the aim of creating a new sports movement from the grassroots.
